Peter Pavement

Managing director and founder

Peter has built Surface Impression up from a graphic design specialist (in 2001) to a multi-media development company. Previously, he ran a publishing company, designed books, taught HND Graphic Design, curated exhibitions and was the lead designer for BBC Online’s teenage section. Peter recently passed Google’s Analytics accreditation and achieved an MA in Digital Media Arts at Brighton University.

Ben Paley

Lead Developer

Ben is our Lead Developer, specialising in PHP and MySQL. His work has included the provision of dynamic content in HTML and other forms, database design, e-commerce applications, on-line catalogues and content management systems. He is the chief architect of our own content management system and an expert in integration of different media types with larger systems.

Shelley Boden

Project manager, accessibility advisor

With a background in both cultural sector (Culture Online, 24 Hour Museums, DCMS) and commercial web development (Victoria Real), Shelley has extensive and comprehensive project management experience and has just become part of the company after many years as an associate. She is also an expert on accessibility and will help ensure inclusion.

Ben Crossman

Design, coding & production

Ben is a recent graduate of the Digital Media Arts MA degree at Brighton University. He brings a fresh look to our web applications and has quickly become a valuable member of the team. With experience illustrating Gray’s Anatomy and designing a wide range of sites and publications across the cultural sector, Ben is an ideal contributor to any project.

Brittany Jamison Lackey

Office & Marketing Manager

Brittany joined us in 2010 with a background in consumer sciences and marketing and keeps everything running smoothly in our Brighton office. As well as looking after our marketing and promotions, she keeps all our admin under control.

Tim Bowers

Content & collections management, production

Tim joined us in 2011, working part time with us and part time with the Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton & Hove. With an MA in Museum Studies from Bournemouth University, Tim has a wide range of academic and practical experience of working with collections and audiences in museums.

Nicola Lucas

Design & production, project management

Nicola joined us in 2012 with a degree in Graphic Image Making from Southampton Solent University where she received an award for Best in Show her final year for illustration and animation work.

Alex Peckham

Developer

Alex is currently studying part-time for an MA in Digital Media Arts at Brighton parallel to working with us. Alex holds a Master's in Electronic Engineering from Bristol University and during his studies wrote a suite of software for 4D video editing in C++ that was subsequently presented at the European Conference on Visual Perception 2004 in Budapest. Alex has been working with Kate Genevieve of Chroma Collective to produce a biofeedback installation and is responsible for all electrics and programming for the installation.

Robin Price

Content direction, information architecture

Robin has 13 years experience in new media, gained at the BBC, News International, The British Council, Channel 4 and the DfES Sure Start website. Previous roles include editorial direction/ project management for BBC Online, where he was responsible for commissioning key sites including BBC homepage, BBC Three and CBBC.

Natalie Laycock

Project management, production, design & coding

[Currently on maternity leave] Part of the team since the 2008 Wired Sussex Brighton Internship Programme, Natalie is involved at almost every stage of our projects. She has been highly praised by clients for her talent, customer service and diligence. With a background in the public sector and a Social Psychology degree, Natalie is focused on usability and accessibility issues so complements our ethos well.

Melanie Menard

Coding, production, design

Melanie developed audio signal processing software for several years before retraining with a MA Digital Arts at Camberwell College of Arts. Her personal video and photography work has been exhibited internationally. For her MA, she researched the subjective experience and interpretation of an artwork by the audience, an interest which makes her keenly aware of user experience in her digital media work.

Yumi Okuda

Content, illustration & design

Yumi has across-the-board skills, with content management, search engine optimisation, editorial, illustration and design skills under her belt. With a background in arts, web development and user-testing, she compliments our team very well. Formerly a staff member in Brighton with us, Yumi now lives in Japan where she continues to work for Surface Impression.

Luke Roskilly

Production, design & coding

Luke comes to us from our longstanding client at the UK German Connection (a British Council project). This gives him invaluable experience from the point of view of both client and supplier. An expert in project management, print production, content, template and css coding and strategy, Luke has the all round skills that we look for in our team.
